Wall Putty Formulation: Ingredients, Process & Plant Setup

Cement-based wall putty is a fine white dry mix applied over plaster to give a smooth, crack-free base for paint. Quality depends on the white cement content, filler fineness, water retention and polymer modification.

Wall Putty ingredients and their role

White cementBinder for hardness and adhesion to plaster
Calcite / dolomite powder (fine mesh)Main filler; controls whiteness, smoothness and sanding
Hydrated lime (optional)Improves workability and whiteness
HPMC / MHEC cellulose etherWater retention so the putty does not dry before it cures

Manufacturing process

  1. Check incoming white cement and calcite for whiteness and mesh size.
  2. Pre-blend the small additives with part of the filler.
  3. Charge cement, filler and pre-blend into the mixer.
  4. Mix until uniform; avoid overmixing that heats the batch.
  5. Pack in 20, 30 or 40 kg bags; run QC on each batch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does wall putty crack?

Usually too little water retention or polymer, too thick a coat, or the plaster was dry and not pre-wetted.

What mesh calcite is used for wall putty?

Fine grades are used so the cured surface sands smoothly; coarser filler gives a rough finish.
