Tile Adhesive Formulation: Ingredients, Process & Plant Setup
Tile adhesive is a polymer-modified cementitious dry mix that replaces sand-cement mortar for fixing ceramic, vitrified and stone tiles. Classes C1 (normal) and C2 (improved) under IS 15477 / EN 12004 differ mainly in polymer and cellulose ether dosage, which drives adhesion, open time and slip resistance.

- Dry the sand to below 0.5% moisture and sieve it into the required fractions.
- Weigh cement, sand and filler; pre-blend the small additives (RDP, cellulose ether, starch ether, formate) separately.
- Charge the mixer with coarse materials first, then the additive pre-blend.
- Mix in a plough-share or ribbon mixer until uniform (typically a few minutes per batch).
- Pack in 20 or 25 kg valve bags and run batch QC before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between C1 and C2 tile adhesive?
C2 must meet higher tensile adhesion (1 N/mm² vs 0.5 N/mm²) after all conditioning, which usually needs more redispersible polymer powder and cellulose ether.
Can I use white cement instead of grey?
Yes. White cement is used for light-coloured stone and glass mosaic so the adhesive does not stain or show through.
