PVA Wood Adhesive (White Glue) Formulation: Ingredients, Process & Plant Setup
White wood glue is a polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) homopolymer emulsion stabilised with polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). It can be made by polymerising vinyl acetate monomer in-house, or by compounding a bought-in PVAc emulsion with plasticiser, filler and additives.

- Dissolve PVOH in hot water in the jacketed reactor.
- Add part of the VAM and initiator; start the reaction under reflux.
- Feed the remaining monomer and initiator gradually while controlling temperature.
- Hold to finish conversion, then cool and strip residual monomer.
- Compound with plasticiser, filler, biocide and defoamer; filter and pack.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make wood glue without a reactor?
Yes, by buying PVAc emulsion and compounding it with plasticiser, filler and additives in a stirred tank. Margins are lower than the polymerisation route.
Why is PVOH used in white glue?
It stabilises the emulsion particles and gives the glue its tack and set speed on wood.
